Liberia: Cellcom Launches GPRS-Edge Technology
8 April 2008
Posted to the web 8 April 2008
Precious S. Seboe
Monrovia.
Cellcom GSM mobile network Monday launched the General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) with Edge.Edge is a digital mobile phone technology that allows increase data transmission rates and improved data transmission reliability.
It is also generally classified as 2.75G and provides up to three times the data capacity of GPRS.
Speaking during a press conference at the Capitol Bye-pass office of Cellcom, Public Relations Officer T. Max Jlateh said the GPRS Edge is the fastest in the world.
According to him, GPRS Edge 2.75G is a technology between the second (2G) and the third (3G) generations of the mobile telephony and is as fast as SMS.
“Unlike other competitors, Cellcom SIM cards are already GPRS- Edge activated and you can access the internet wherever there is a Cellcom signal,” Mr. Jlateh said.
He indicated that the services for the GPRS Edge are free for now until an experimental period expected to last one for month is over.
CELLCOM GPRS SETTING:
Settings->Connections->GPRS->GPRS->Add
Account Name: CellcomGprs
Access Point: Web.cellcomnet.net
Port: 8080
IP Address: 192.168.170.2
Leave all the rest blank
After that switch your phone off and on!
Or Call 111 (Customer Care) For Gprs Configuration.

Hurray!! Lonestarcell finally Launch GPRS Service,What’s the “G” Stand for? the “G” on the top of your cell phone screen means that the network its supports GPRS or General Packet Radio Service. GPRS is the entry level standard for cellular data transmission. GPRS falls under the GSM (Global System for Mobile communications) standard for mobile telephony. Commonly thought of as a second and a half generation (2.5G) cellular technology, GPRS allows for data transfers of speeds up to 114Kbps. The word “Lonestar” on the other side of your cell phone screen means you are getting GPRS in Liberia.
Just last week Lonestar Cell announced their jump into GPRS. After Libercell, Lonestar is the 2nd carrier in Liberia to do this. The internet is about as slow as it is in the rest of the country, but it’s still good enough for email. Mobile phone apps like Google Maps and Microsoft Live Search work well enough but don’t really have any content for the greater Monrovia area.
Lonestar was the first cell phone operator in Liberia using the GSM standard. For a long time, they held a monopoly in the cellular market until Cellcom GSM came along. Today, they are the largest carrier with about 500,000 subscribers. It will be interesting to see what this does to the already competitive GSM market in Liberia.
LONESTAR GPRS SETTING:
Account Name: lccgprs
Access Point: internetlcc
Leave all the rest blank
After that switch your phone off and on!

I am glad that there are many readers for SMS related articles at Sree’s Tech Notes. Here I am introducing a Mobile Social Network, Wadja.com. You can sign up with Wadja for social networking and then use the FREE UNLIMITED SMS to your friends’ mobile phones over 500 networks and 200 countries.
To send SMS, there is nothing to download or install, You just sign up and send free unlimited SMS (text message) to your Wadja friends. If you add your mobile phone number to your profile you can receive sms online from other Wadja users also. Wadja supports 80 character messages. There is no delivery confirmation.
The URL http://www.m.wadja.com is the mobile compliant URL for the http://www.wadja.com service. It is specifically designed to be viewed on your mobile phone or handset device.
***************************************************************************
How do I send SMS (text message) to Wadja users?
To message users you must be signed in to your Wadja account. Just select the friends Mobile Profile you want to message and click on the ‘Send message’ link. You can then write your subject and message body and click send. Your message is immediately delivered to your friends inbox and mobile phone handset through a text (sms) alert.
Can I message users that are not on my friends list?
Yes, you can contact any Wadja user with your private message.
Who can I text (sms) message? How do I text (sms) message Wadja users?
You can send a free text (sms) messages to anyone who is on your friends list and has added their phone number to their details page. To text (sms) message a friend simply sign in to your Wadja account and click on the Text SMS link. You can then add (click check box) your friends name to the message box. You will notice that Wadja do not actually show your friend’s mobile number, but rather their Wadja ID for security reasons.
How can I receive text (sms) messages?
In order to receive text (sms) messages from your friends list, you need to provide your mobile number in the ‘About me/Interests’ option of your account. Keep in mind that you can make your mobile number invisible to your friends list, but still receive messages, since your friends only see your Wadja ID as a ‘Send to’ option in their sms contact list. Your mobile number will only be available to your friends in your network.
Does my mobile number need to be a certain format?
Your mobile number should be in the following format: + country code, area code, and number…e.g. in the US (+1 602 2233445) with 1 being the country code.
